Sleep

Nap time routine

  • Turn on lamp on the bedside table.
  • Turn on sound machine.
  • Sing "Nå lukker sola sitt øye" and "Min båt er så liten" while holding him.
  • Put him down.
  • Turn the light off and close the door.
He will probably cry for a few minutes and then should go to sleep. If he cries for more than 10–15 minutes, try to troubleshoot the nap or try again in the pram or carrier (if on the go).

In general he usually naps 1 hour for the first nap and 30–40 minutes for the second nap. Try to wake him up after this amount of time so that he saves most of his sleep for night time. It's ok to swap which nap is the long nap as long as overall daytime sleep adds up to around 1.5 hours. Also try to make sure he stays awake from 4pm until bedtime.

Bed time routine

You probably won't need to put him down for the night while you are here, but in case you ever need to, this is the routine:

  • Make sure he's had enough to eat and drink.
  • Diaper change.
  • Brush teeth with the little yellow toothbrush and the kiddie toothpaste.
  • Read books.
  • Pray.
  • Turn on lamp on the bedside table.
  • Turn on sound machine.
  • Sing 3 verses of "Amazing Grace" while holding him.
  • Put him down.
  • Turn the light off and close the door.

Troubleshooting sleep problems

If he has been crying for 10–15 minutes and doesn't seem to be slowing down:

  • Teething? Give 5ml of Calpol.
  • Thirsty? Give some water or milk in a cup.
  • Hot? Strip him down to just diaper.
